Not All Heroes Wear Capes

At last month’s Heroes and Helpers event—co-hosted by Catholic Charities Hawai‘i, the Kaneohe Target at Windward Mall, and our incredible local first responders—two heartwarming moments truly stood out.

Heroes and Helpers brings holiday joy to keiki across O‘ahu by pairing each child with a first responder and giving them a gift card to shop for Christmas gifts for themselves and their families.

Officer Ilse Pratt & Kayla
Officer Pratt was paired with Kayla, an 11-year-old who immediately connected with her. Instead of toys, Kayla carefully chose essentials—pajamas, a blanket, clothing, and a volleyball to practice with. She shared how her recent move to Waimānalo has brought her happiness and stability, and how she planned to pass her gently used clothing to her younger sister.

When Officer Pratt learned Kayla dreamed of having a bed of her own, she helped her pick out an air mattress. And when the total went over Kayla’s gift card, Officer Pratt quietly paid the difference.

When Kayla realized what had happened, she covered her eyes—overwhelmed with tears of joy.

Kianna shopped with such thoughtfulness—choosing a cinnamon roll stuffed animal for her mom, a Stitch toy for her best friend, gifts for her sister, a penguin for her dad, and a gift for her uncle’s girlfriend.

The only item she picked for herself was an angel… a fitting gift for such a special little girl.

These moments reflect what Heroes and Helpers is all about—compassion, generosity, and community coming together for our keiki.

Not all heroes wear capes. Some show their heroism through kindness, love, and hearts full of aloha.
