Each parish in the Diocese of Honolulu received a complimentary copy of our video and facilitator guide, “Baptism - One ’Ohana”.
“Baptism - One ’Ohana”, made possible by With Grateful Hearts funding, is meant to serve as a resource for clergy and laity involved in baptism preparation and has been given a nihil obstat by Monsignor John Mbinda, Diocesan Censor Librorum and an Approbatio by Most Reverend Larry Silva, Bishop of Honolulu. It provides an overview of the Sacrament of Baptism and aligns with the expectations for baptismal catechesis stated in the diocesan “Norms for the Preparation and Celebration of Christian Initiation and First Penance” promulgated by Bishop Silva in May 2010.
The inviting catechetical style of Bishop Silva, local clergy, and laity as well as the appealing geographic and multi-cultural images of Hawaii combine to instruct, inspire, and encourage an ever-deepening commitment to Christian life. A special segment on Hawaii’s saints Damien DeVeuster and Marianne Cope is featured, highlighting them as persons who faithfully lived out their baptismal promises through inculturating the gospel message, bringing Christ’s transforming love and regenerating force to the communities they served. Inspired by their lives, we are reminded of our own call to holiness as members of the Church.
It is the hope that the teachings conveyed in “Baptism - One ’Ohana” will help to strengthen all in the diocese who approach the Church for the sacrament of baptism.
In “Eucharist - One ‘Ohana”, catechesis and reflections on the sacrament of Eucharist – the central sacrament of our Catholic faith – are developed along three themes: We Give Thanks, We Are Nourished, and We Are Sent. The appealing geographic and multi-cultural images of Hawaii serve as backdrop as Bishop Silva, local clergy, children, and adult lay persons instruct, inspire, and encourage an ever-deepening love for the Eucharist. Saints Damien DeVeuster and Marianne Cope are once again featured, highlighting them as persons who faithfully lived the Eucharist, bringing Christ’s transforming love and regenerating force to the communities they served.
“Eucharist - One ‘Ohana” is meant to serve as a resource for the faithful and inquirer alike, particularly in adult faith formation and Rites for Christian Initiation of Adult (RCIA) gatherings and sessions for parents/godparents of children preparing to receive First Holy Communion. However, every parish and school ministry will benefit from watching the video and reflecting upon the Eucharist as our “source and summit”.
“Reconciliation - One ’Ohana” has been given a nihil obstat and approbatio by Most Reverend Larry Silva, Bishop of Honolulu and introduces the viewer to Bishop Silva's theological and pastoral reflections on the sacrament. The video's catechetical content aligns with the expectations for catechesis stated in the “Norms For the Sacraments of Christian Initiation and First Penance and Reconciliation” (May, 2010).
As with our videos on Baptism and Eucharist, “Reconciliation, One ’Ohana” features the inviting catechetical style of Bishop Silva and members of our clergy and laity. The heart of the sacrament – God’s extravagant, unconditional love for us – is conveyed through a spirit of aloha, appealing Hawaiian scenery, and inclusive, multi-cultural references. These combine to instruct, inspire, and encourage an ever-deepening commitment to Christian life.
