Excerpts from Bishop Michael Castori’s letter to Bishops and Dioceses Requesting Support of Hawaii’s Storm Relief and Recovery Fund

Dear Brother Bishop,

Peace be with you!

In 2023, when devastating wildfires swept through Maui, you and the faithful of your diocese responded to the people of Hawaiʻi with extraordinary generosity and compassion. Your support brought hope and much-needed assistance to families and communities facing unimaginable loss. On behalf of the Church in Hawaiʻi, I am deeply grateful for the kindness you extended to our ʻohana.

Today, I write to ask once again for your prayers and, if possible, your assistance. Hurricanes recently brought destructive winds, torrential rain, and severe flooding to our entire State. Families and communities have suffered damage and displacement, and for many, the work of recovery and rebuilding will continue long after the storm has passed.

In response, the Hawaiʻi Catholic Community Foundation has established the Hawaiʻi Storm Relief and Recovery Fund to support relief and recovery efforts following hurricanes, tropical storms, and other catastrophic events impacting our island communities. Currently, the fund is supporting the needs arising from hurricanes, as affected communities begin the difficult work of recovery and rebuilding. If your diocese is able to assist us once again, whether through a contribution or by inviting the faithful to support these efforts, we would be profoundly grateful. Your generosity will help provide relief and recovery assistance where it is most needed 

Above all, I ask you to join us in prayer for those who have suffered loss, for families whose homes and livelihoods have been affected, for first responders and relief workers, and for all those working to restore our communities. Thank you for the compassion you have already shown the people of Hawaiʻi and for your continued solidarity with us. Just as the generosity of the wider Church strengthened the people of Maui in their time of need, your support today is a powerful reminder that our island communities do not face these challenges alone.

May God bless you and the faithful entrusted to your care abundantly.
