St. Anthony Parish -- Kailua and Alzheimer's Respite Care
Last year, St. Anthony Parish — Kailua Outreach received a grant from the Brookdale Foundation to develop a respite program for persons who may be afflicted with Alzheimer’s or dementia. The Foundation also provided the necessary training for volunteers through “Project Dana” (a Japanese term meaning selfless giving).
The site was opened on February 3rd, 1999 with two clients and 6 volunteers. St. Christopher Episcopal Church opened their door for us on Mondays from 9:00 am till 1:30 pm.
This program was set up to give caregivers a well needed break once a week by providing a safe place for those in their care. Snacks and lunch are served and everyone participates in activities. The atmosphere is casual, relaxing and similar to a “club” where people can meet, chat and do what they enjoy (playing checkers, painting, various games and group activities such as singing, and exercising).
Volunteers and clients eat meals together and play games together during which great friendships develop. One participant responded so well to the part-time respite program, that they were able to transfer to a full time Alzheimer’s program.
Unfortunately, due to a lack of space the program was suspended as of December 20, 1999.
We are looking for a new place to continue this valuable program. |
