Current Resources for Financial Assistance from the Office for Social Ministry

February 14, 2022

From the Office for Social Ministry

Since the pandemic, Congress has passed multiple relief packages enabling providers to distribute millions to help feed the hungry, pay for housing and other utiilities for those struggling from COVID-related challenges. Although many funds from those large initiatives have been expended,  there are still resources available for those still in need. Recently, Hawaiian Electric issued a $2 million Kokua Fund that helped 22,000 households receive $90 off their late electric bill effective January 31, 2022.

Yet parishes continue to receive requests from individuals and families seeking financial assistance to pay back rent and utilities.  If your parish has an outreach or social ministry coordinator or office staff fielding calls and people stopping by for kokua, this chart will prove helpful, especially for those needing assistance on Oahu, Maui and Hawaii Island.  Resource information encompassing all islands include:

  • Aloha United Way - 211 or online at www.auw211.org.
  • LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) - applications must be submitted to managing organizations on each island no later than June 30th.
  • DHHL’s Rent Relief and Ka Wailele provides grants to native Hawaiians.
  • Gregory House assists persons living with HIV/AIDS and their families.

We are continuing to update our resource page at www.officeforsocialministry.org.  See the attached Resource chart with contact phone and website information. Please feel free to share this link with those seeking financial relief.
